Is Gastric Bypass Surgery Right For You?

Gastrointestinal surgery may be the next step for people who remain severely obese after trying nonsurgical approaches, or for people who have an obesity-related disease. Candidates for surgery have:

  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more
  • A life-threatening obesity-related health problem that can be made better with weight loss such as diabetes, severe sleep apnea, or heart disease and a BMI of 35 or more.
  • Obesity-related physical problems that interfere with employment, walking, or family function.
  • A BMI of 35 or more along with a life-threatening illness that can be made better with weight loss, such as diabetes, hypertension, and degenerative joint disease.

If you fit the above profile, then you may want to ask yourself the following questions before making the decision about whether weight-loss surgery is right for you:

  • Are you unlikely to lose a large amount of weight successfully with nonsurgical measures?
  • Have you thoroughly educated yourself about the procedure and do you understand the effects of treatment?
  • Are you determined to lose the weight necessary to improve your health?
  • Are you ready to accept the lifestyle changes that may come as a result of the operation, including the need to chew well and the inability to eat large meals?
  • Are you aware of the possibility of serious complications, dietary restrictions, and occasional failures?
  • Can you commit to lifelong medical follow-up?

You must remember:  There are no guarantees that a patient will lose and maintain weight loss by any method, including surgery. Success is only possible when a patient is willing to commit to behavioral changes and medical follow-up for the rest of their life.
